Lynn Chadwick
A rare and perfectly sized sculpture from Chadwick, combining geometrical elements with naturalistic, feminine shapes. Chadwick was chosen in 1956 as one of the lead sculptors to represent Britain at the XXVIII Venice Biennale where he was awarded the International Sculpture Prize, suprpassing the favourite, Alberto Giacometti, as well as Germaine Richier and making his the youngest ever recipient of the prize. He became the natural successor to hennery Moore as Britain’s leading sculptor and artistic ambassador.
“He is preoccupied with states of attention and alertness in the human figure … his aim is to incorporate a moment of maximum intensity” Herbert Read, 1962.
Chadwick’s female heads possess a wonderful and distinctive diamond or pyramid shape and he started polishing factes of his works to accentuate certain features. Here a radiant face tops a body mixing sinuous curves with straight lines and rougher texture. Humanity and monumentality combine in one of his finest creations.
