One of Bratby's most important works, combining as it does his famous table tops with a study of his family in their own kitchen. Photograph courtesy of Julian Hartnoll. Bratby was a true genius and it is in no way fanciful to compare his work with an interior version of Lowry's artistry or to the work of Auerbach and Kossoff. Ludicrously undervalued. Here we see colour re-emerging in British paintings as rationing ended. Dripping with the feel and paraphernalia of the period.
